Bland and uninspired, the meat-free options were rarely ever enticing enough to make a carnivore look twice.
But today, things are different, and not just for the roughly 10% of the UK who count themselves as vegetarian and vegan. As a society, we're eating less meat, and the meat-free market is booming. Yesterday's steadfast meat-eaters are today's flexitarians, and that's a change we see every day, in each of our restaurants at Fortnum's. The fact that our vegetarian and vegan dishes are always utterly delicious helps, of course.
That's good news for the planet, too - plant-based foods require less energy and produce far lower carbon emissions than meat products.
