1. He Liked to Draw Ok, so you probably already know that. But do you know how much he liked to draw? When he died in 1519, itâs reported that he left behind a collection of more than 6,000 journal pages filled with drawings, notes, and designs. 2. Da Vinci Isnât His Real Name âDa Vinciâ indicated where Leonardo was from (a region of Italy near Tuscany) and is NOT his actual surname. I guess that means my last name is Kansas?? 3. He Was a Victim of Theft (Kinda) His painting ââthe Madonna of the Yarnwinder was stolen in 2003 from a Scottish home by 2 men disguised as tourists. The painting was thankfully recovered 4 years later during a police raid in Glasgow. Had he lived to be 400+ years old, Da Vinci would have been very upset about this theft! đ 4. He Never Went to School (But That Didnât Stop Him) Da Vinci learned to read and write AT HOME until he was sent to apprentice under Andrea del Verrocchio, a celebrated painter and sculptor during that time. 5. He Once Designed a âHelicopterâ Showcasing his foresight, Da Vinci created an early design for what could be called a âflying machine,â which used manpower to rotate the wooden blades. Modern engineers commented that while it was a great idea, the craft would have never taken flight as manpower would not be enough to lift it off the ground.
