Last year, we celebrated the 4th of July with a marathon viewing of Independence Day—watching Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum save the planet from certain extraterrestrial doom. And while we love seeing big, mean aliens getting KO’d—this year, we’re looking forward to getting outside, meeting up with friends, and exercising our freedom to grill any and everything. With that in mind, we’ve gathered up a few long-weekend essentials to guarantee good times for whatever your 4th of July weekend has in store. Hopefully it’s a little more laidback than Bill Pullman’s presidency.

Two things we didn’t know about Kauai:
1) It has more rivers than any of the other Hawaiian islands.
2) Buildings can't be taller than a coconut palm tree.
