Do you know the origins of modern trick-or-treating?

In 1000 AD the Christian church designated an early version of Halloween called “All Soul’s Day” which was celebrated in England as a time for honoring the dead. People would visit the doors of the rich and offer to pray for their deceased relatives in exchange for “soul cake” treats. 

At the time, young folk in Scotland and Ireland celebrated with “guising” in which they would do their visits in costumes when asking for offerings. Rather than praying to the dead they would sing, recite a poem, or perform a “trick” before collecting a treat!
