But, without resorting to literary criticism, we think the talented Mr. Shakespeare had rather overlooked the gorgeous floral flavour of that most famous of flowers.
And so, with the blue skies and blooming gardens of summer on the horizon - not to mention the colourful displays going up at the Chelsea Flower Show - we’re celebrating all the glorious creations at Fortnum’s with a sweet, rosy story to tell.
We’re so fond of this particular flower that we even tend to a garden full of our very own rose bushes. Found deep in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, we’ve a team of rose handlers who harvest the flowers at their peak each year. Come the early evening - when their scent is at its most memorably fragrant - they pick the flowers by hand, before removing their petals, again by hand, one at a time.
And once that patient process is complete, the petals are gently cooked in small batches, creating an alchemic mixture that we use to infuse Fortnum’s treats as diverse as our iconic Rose Petal Jelly, our Nonpareil Marmalade with Rose Petals, and our Rose Petal Chutney.
