Before the “net,” as it is commonly referred to, computers were stand-alone machines, unable to communicate with each other. Until 1967, when a researcher at MIT created ARPANET – a networking system that linked computers at 4 colleges in California and Utah.

2. Graphics + User Interface = Getting Closer

In 1973, Xerox introduced the Alto computer system, which featured a graphic-based user interface with elements we’re all now familiar with – windows, pointers, menus, and icons.

Unfortunately, the machine didn’t sell, but this early adoption of graphics on the user interface opened the door for companies like Apple and Microsoft to adopt the operating system for household use.
