Hey there, You know firsthand how much better your body and mind feel and function when you get enough sleep, but did you know that sufficient sleep can also help you lose fat and keep it off? Scientists from The University of Chicago and University of Wisconsin–Madison recruited 80 overweight men and women aged between 21 and 40 years old who regularly slept less than 6.5 hours per night and tracked their calorie intake and expenditure, sleep habits, and body weight and composition for 2 weeks. Then, the researchers split the participants into 2 groups: A sleep-extension group that received sleep hygiene coaching designed to help them sleep 2 hours longer each night, and a control group that continued to stumble through life in a sleep-deprived stupor. There were two primary results: 1. The people in the sleep extension group slept 1.2 hours more per night than usual on average, and as a result, spontaneously ate ~156 fewer calories per day and lost about a pound of body weight (as a result of eating less food). 2. The people in the control group continued to sleep just 5.5-to-6.5 hours per night, spontaneously increased their daily caloric intake by ~115 calories on average, and gained about ⅔ of a pound of body weight (as a result of eating more food). So, sleep at least 7 hours per night, and you’ll find it easier to control your calories and lose fat faster.
