1. The Band-Aid 🩹

Back in 1920, a cotton buyer for Johnson & Johnson named Earle Dickson had a problem. His wife, Josephine, was very… how should we say… accident prone. 

Since going to the doctor for every cut and scrape was too expensive, Earl cut a small piece of gauze and placed it on another strip of gauze with adhesive on each end. The Band-Aid was born! Band-Aids were sterilized in 1939 and have remained largely unchanged to this day!

2. The Microwave 🧑‍🍳

In 1932, an electrician named Percy Spencer was standing in front of an active radar set when he noticed that the candy bar in his pocket was MELTING! Intrigued by this unrestricted heat, Percy created a massive box, which could “shoot '' electromagnetic radiation at food to heat it up.

Modern microwaves are much smaller (and, thankfully, safer) than Percy’s invention. But you can think of him the next time you’re warming up your leftover pad thai!

3. Silly Putty 🥚

This childhood favorite definitely didn’t start out as a toy! James Wright, a World War II engineer, was trying to create a cheap alternative to synthetic rubber for the war effort. He combined silicone oil and boric acid to create a substance far stretchier and bouncier than rubber. However, when they saw his creation, the military believed it wasn’t suitable for the battlefield.

Years later, a businessman named Peter Hodgson stumbled upon the substance and realized how fun it was to play with! He marketed it as a toy. Hodgson must have been onto something because more than 300 million eggs of Silly Putty have been sold since 1950!
